Sample must be submitted in Cary Blair media unless delivered to Laboratory within 2 hours.
1. Obtain a portion of a grossly bloody, mucoid, or non-formed stool on a cotton-tipped swab.
2. Submerge swab in Carey Blair transport media. Replace cap.
3. Label swab with patient’s name (first and last), date and time of collection, and type of specimen.
4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient or refrigerate temperature.
Note: 1. Only 1 allowed per 24 hours.
2. Carey Blair Collection Kit is available from Laboratory. If no Carey Blair media is available, stool must be in Laboratory within 2 hours of collection.
Conventional Culture Techniques
Test includes gram stain for WBC, Escherichia coli (O157:H7), salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, and shiga toxin antigen.
No Campylobacter, Salmonella, Shigella or Shigatoxins I or II recovered.
