Patient Preparation
1. Patient does not need to be fasting and no appointment is necessary.
2. Patient is given a 50 g bottle of GlucolaTM to drink. Entire bottle must be ingested within 5 minutes. Indicate time GlucolaTM was injested.
3. Do not eat or drink until after blood is drawn (1 hour).
4. At registration desk, patient must inform staff of time to be drawn, 1 hour post 50 g of GlucolaTM.
5. Patient must arrive at draw station at least 15 to 20 minutes before blood draw is due.
Specimen Collection
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Plasma
Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of draw.
Container/Tube: Grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tube
Specimen Volume: 5 mL of potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride plasma
Transport Temperature: Ambient
Collection Instructions: Spin down immediately. Forward promptly.

2. Indicate plasma.
3. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
Serum
Specimen must arrive within 30 minutes of draw.
Container/Tube: Serum gel tube
Specimen Volume: 5 mL of serum
Transport Temperature: Ambient
Collection Instructions: Allow specimen to clot for 30 minutes. Spin in centrifuge. If there is a delay in transport of ≥30 minutes, send specimen refrigerated.

3. Label specimen appropriately (serum).
Colorimetric, Glucose Oxidase
Used as a pregnancy glucose screen.
65-100 mg/dL
Critical values (automatic call-back): <50 mg/dL or >500 mg/dL
Monday through Friday
