Aid in detection and confirmation of autoimmune thyroiditis and to distinguish from other causes of goiter, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis and juvenile lymphocytic thyroiditis. A negative test for thyroid peroxidase antibodies (ATPO) and thyroglobulin antibodies essentially rules out a diagnosis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
Patients with other autoimmune disorders such as Sjogren's syndrome, SLE, RA, or autoimmune hemolytic anemia may be positive for thyroid antibodies. Patients with myxedema, granulomatous thyroiditis, nontoxic nodular goiter and thyroid carcinoma may occasionally produce thyroid antibodies.
