Red top or SST tube
3 mL serum
1 mL serum
MLabs client requests for this test will be sent to Mayo Medical Laboratories.
Collect specimen in a red top or SST tube. Centrifuge, aliquot serum into a plastic vial and refrigerate. Cerebrospinal fluid, and sterile fluids such as thoracenteses, pleural, and joint fluid are also acceptable. Specify Blastomyces, Coccidioides, and/or Histoplasma Antibodies. Testing for the same test and source is not approved for specimens collected less than 7 days apart.
1 - 3 weeks
Routine testing is performed by the complement fixation method. Immunodiffusion methodology will be used to resolve questions of cross-reactivity, if the specimen has anti-complementary antibodies or if specifically requested in suspected cases of blastomycosis.
Negative. A four-fold or greater rise in titer between acute and convalescent paired specimens, collected 14-21 days apart is consistent with the diagnosis of recent infection. In the presence of high titer against one fungal pathogen, other low level antibody titers may represent a cross-reaction and are not considered significant.
To obtain serologic evidence of an immune response (antibody production) to Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomyces dermatitidis, or Coccidioides immitis.
Test sent to Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS); although there is no charge for testing, MLabs charges a handling fee for processing and forwarding specimens to MDHHS.
